Chapter 1 - The Faded Bracelet

Sarah stared at the faded plastic band wrapped around the boy's thin wrist.
Her trembling fingers traced the letters of her own name.
It was impossible.
The doctors had told her Thomas died of sudden respiratory failure shortly after birth.
She had held a tiny, cold body wrapped in a white blanket.
She had buried a closed casket in the pouring rain eight years ago.
Now, her son was standing in front of her, wearing dirty clothes and shivering in the autumn wind.
Emily watched them with wide, confused eyes.
She did not understand how the hungry homeless boy could be her brother.
Sarah pulled Thomas closer, wrapping her expensive wool coat around his fragile shoulders.
She looked around the busy street, suddenly feeling as though they were being watched.
She had to get him off the sidewalk before whoever kept him realized he was missing.
She rushed both children into her car and locked the heavy doors.
The heater roared to life, but Thomas continued to shake uncontrollably.
Sarah drove them straight to her house in the quiet, wealthy suburbs.
She poured Thomas a hot bath and gave him a fresh set of clothes.
He ate three bowls of warm soup while sitting on the edge of the velvet sofa.
Emily sat beside him, gently showing him how to play with her tablet.
Sarah watched them from the kitchen, dialing her husband David on her cell phone.
David was away on a business trip in Europe, and his phone went straight to a cold voicemail.
She decided to wait before telling him the miraculous news.
She walked into the living room and knelt in front of Thomas.
She asked him gently about the woman who had kept him all these years.
Thomas shrank back against the sofa cushions, his blue eyes filled with absolute terror.
He whispered that the woman lived in a huge house with tall iron gates.
He said she always smelled like expensive roses and wore a shiny gold necklace with a ruby pendant.
Sarah felt all the blood drain entirely from her face.
That specific description matched only one person in her entire life.
It perfectly described her older sister, Victoria.
Thomas pointed a shaking finger toward the stone mantelpiece across the room.
He pointed directly at a framed photograph of Victoria standing next to Sarah at a family gala.
Thomas whispered that this was the cruel woman who locked him in the dark basement.
Before Sarah could even process this horrific betrayal, the front doorbell rang with a loud, aggressive chime.

She looked at the security monitor on the wall and gasped in pure shock.
Victoria was standing on the front porch, staring directly into the camera with a twisted smile.
