Chapter 5 - The Husband's Lie

The blinding headlights cast long, terrifying shadows across the cracked pavement of the alley.

David walked slowly toward them, his expensive suit perfectly tailored and completely out of place.

He looked at Thomas with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.

He complained that the boy was supposed to be locked away forever.

Sarah pushed the children safely behind her back, shielding them with her own body.

She demanded to know how he could be so heartless toward his own flesh and blood.

David laughed coldly, aiming the suppressed pistol directly at Sarah's chest.

He explained that Thomas was never just a pawn to settle a gambling debt.

He revealed that Thomas had inherited a rare genetic blood type that Victoria desperately needed.

Victoria had a terminal illness, and she had been using the boy for illegal, secret blood transfusions to keep herself alive.

Sarah felt her knees buckle as the sheer horror of her son's captivity finally made sense.

They had treated her precious boy like a biological medical supply.

David raised his weapon higher, telling Sarah that her interference had ruined a billion-dollar arrangement.

He ordered the corrupt police officers to grab the children and put them in the vehicles.

Emily screamed and kicked as a massive man dragged her away from her mother.

Thomas bit the hand of the officer holding him, fighting like a wild animal to stay with Sarah.

David stepped closer to Sarah, preparing to pull the deadly trigger.

Suddenly, a loud siren wailed in the distance, growing rapidly louder by the second.

An actual state police convoy, unaware of the corrupt local cops, happened to be passing on the highway.

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the alleyway, causing David to hesitate.

He knew he could not risk a massive shootout with state troopers in an open parking lot.

He cursed violently, ordering his men to abandon the kidnapping for now.

They dropped the children onto the wet pavement and scrambled back into their black vehicles.

David pointed his gun at Sarah one last time, promising that he would finish this tonight.

The vehicles sped away into the darkness just as the state troopers pulled into the diner lot.

Sarah fell to her knees, pulling Emily and Thomas into a desperate, crushing embrace.

She knew the state police could only protect them temporarily.

David and Victoria controlled the local judges, the mayor, and half the city's police force.

If she handed the silver bank key over to the authorities, it would mysteriously disappear.

She had to break into the bank herself and secure the documents before sunrise.

A state trooper approached them, asking if they were okay and requesting their identification.

Sarah looked at the trooper's name badge, a crazy and dangerous plan forming in her mind.

She lied flawlessly, claiming her abusive ex-husband had just tried to rob them.

She asked the trooper if he could kindly give them a safe ride into the downtown financial district.

The trooper agreed, completely unaware that he was escorting the most wanted woman in the city.

As they climbed into the back of the cruiser, Thomas pulled something from his pocket.

He handed Sarah a heavy, gold ruby necklace that he had managed to snatch from David's pocket during the struggle.

Sarah stared at the necklace, realizing it contained a hidden digital tracking microchip.
