Chapter 8 - The Shadow Investor

The security camera feed flickered and died just as the black van obscured the alleyway.

I stared at the static on my screen, my heart pounding violently against my ribs.

I had no idea if Julian was dead, alive, or kidnapped by the furious corporate mercenary.

Sophia paced across the penthouse floor, aggressively dialing contacts at the police department.

She finally received a confidential update from a detective who owed her a massive favor.

The police had found the alley completely empty, with no blood and no signs of a fatal struggle.

Julian had vanished into the night, and the hitman had disappeared right along with him.

I leaned back in my wheelchair, rubbing my aching temples in absolute frustration.

I needed Julian alive so he could face justice in a public courtroom for his countless crimes.

Suddenly, my laptop chimed with a high-priority video conference request from the Core Dynamics boardroom.

Arthur Thorne had managed to restore a fraction of the company’s internal network.

I accepted the call, blocking my camera feed so they could not see my current location.

Arthur was sitting at the head of the polished boardroom table, looking incredibly stressed.

The rest of the corporate board members were shouting over each other in pure financial panic.

Arthur slammed his fist on the table and demanded silence from the terrified executives.

He announced that Aurora Capital was completely bankrupt and the company would fold by morning.

However, Arthur revealed that he had found a mysterious private investor willing to save them.

This unknown savior was offering to buy the entire conglomerate for pennies on the dollar.

I immediately recognized the hostile takeover strategy that Arthur was trying to execute.

He was trying to sell my life's work to a shadow corporation before I could reclaim my power.

I rapidly typed a backdoor code to investigate the financial origin of this mysterious new investor.

The digital trail bounced through a dozen international shell companies before landing in Chicago.

The shadow investor was not a massive hedge fund or a foreign banking syndicate.

The investor was Julian’s former mistress, the lead financial auditor who had fled to Europe.

She had somehow acquired enough illicit funding to buy the entire empire right out from under me.

Arthur proudly projected the final sale contract onto the massive screen in the boardroom.

He declared that the mistress was the new majority shareholder and the rightful queen of Core Dynamics.

The boardroom doors suddenly swung open, and the mistress walked in wearing a brilliant red dress.

She smiled fiercely at Arthur and prepared to sign the documents that would destroy me forever.

I realized I had grossly underestimated the true mastermind behind this entire corporate conspiracy.

The mistress picked up a gold pen and lowered it toward the signature line on the contract.

I slammed my hand down on my keyboard and activated the building's emergency fire suppression system.
