Chapter 7 - The Murder Plot

The photograph on the tiny screen of my burner phone made my blood turn to absolute ice.
The horrific car crash outside my bakery had not been a tragic accident caused by a distracted driver.
It had been a deliberate and calculated attempted murder orchestrated by my own husband.
Julian had paid a man to run me over so he could inherit my fortune as a grieving widower.
When I survived with only a broken leg, his entire sinister plan had completely unraveled.
That was why he had been so frantic to move the offshore money and take control of the company.
He needed the cash to pay off the hitman before the man went to the police.
I handed the phone to Sophia, and her professional composure shattered instantly.
She ordered the driver of our armored vehicle to head directly to a private secure safehouse.
We could not trust the local police, because Julian clearly had informants working inside the precinct.
I needed to gather enough absolute proof to put Julian away for the rest of his natural life.
We arrived at a fortified penthouse suite overlooking the dark waters of Lake Michigan.
My security team immediately swept the entire location for listening devices and hidden cameras.
Once the room was clear, my lead technician handed me a brand new, fully encrypted military-grade laptop.
I cracked my knuckles and dived directly into the deepest layers of the dark web.
I traced the digital footprint of the man in the photograph who had driven the car.
He was a known corporate mercenary who specialized in making assassinations look like unfortunate accidents.
I hacked into his personal bank accounts and found the massive pending wire transfer from Julian.
The money was scheduled to clear at exactly midnight tonight, which meant time was running out.
If the hitman received his payment, he would disappear to a country without an extradition treaty.
I wrote a malicious script and infected the routing number holding Julian’s stolen funds.
I redirected the entire payment to an anonymous charity organization halfway across the globe.
Julian’s hitman was never going to see a single penny of that blood money.
At eleven in the evening, I accessed the security cameras of the bar where they were meeting.
I watched the hitman check his phone at midnight and realize the payment had completely failed.
The mercenary’s face twisted into a mask of pure rage as he grabbed Julian by the throat.
He dragged my terrified husband out the back door of the bar and into a dark, deserted alleyway.
Julian fell to his knees and begged for his life, promising he could get more money by morning.
The hitman pulled a silenced pistol from his jacket and aimed it directly at Julian’s head.
I had the power to save Julian by calling the police and sending them to the alleyway.
May you like
I hovered my finger over the emergency dial button, paralyzed by the weight of the decision.
Before I could make a choice, a black van abruptly swerved into the alley and blocked the camera's view.
