Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

The explosion was deafening, a roaring wall of orange flame shooting into the high ceiling of the hangar.

The shockwave knocked Mom and me backward onto the hard concrete, ears ringing violently.

The intense heat singed the hair on my arms, and thick black smoke instantly filled the cavernous building.

David had been much closer to the blast, and the force threw him violently into the side of the waiting airplane.

His handgun skittered across the floor, sliding completely out of his reach.

Mom scrambled to her feet, ignoring the blood dripping from her chin, and grabbed my hand.

We sprinted through the blinding smoke, heading toward the small side door at the back of the hangar.

The rogue driver tried to intercept us, coughing and blinded by the chemical smoke.

Mom didn't slow down; she lowered her shoulder and tackled him right in the stomach, sending him tumbling over a pile of rusty tools.

We pushed through the heavy metal door and burst out into the cool, fresh night air.

We ran into the tall, overgrown grass of the abandoned airfield, gasping for clean oxygen.

Behind us, the hangar was entirely consumed by fire, the flames illuminating the dark sky like a horrific beacon.

We ran until our legs burned, hiding behind a rusted out airplane fuselage at the edge of the property.

Suddenly, the roar of massive engines drowned out the sound of the crackling fire.

Three black helicopters materialized out of the dark sky, their massive spotlights cutting through the smoke.

The federal convoy had realized our SUV was missing and tracked the GPS signal straight to the explosion.

Dozens of armed FBI tactical agents poured out of the helicopters before they even touched the ground, swarming the airfield.

Through the smoke, I saw David stumble out of the burning hangar, his clothes scorched and his face covered in soot.

He looked around wildly, realizing he was completely surrounded by dozens of laser sights pointing directly at his chest.

Agent Carter stepped out of the lead helicopter, holding a megaphone to her mouth.

"David Vance, you are completely surrounded by federal agents, drop to your knees immediately!" she commanded.

David looked at the agents, then looked toward the woods where we were hiding, his eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred.

Instead of surrendering, he reached into his ankle holster, pulling a secondary weapon and aiming it desperately toward the helicopters.

A barrage of gunfire echoed through the night, echoing like thunder across the empty field.

David's body jerked violently, and he collapsed onto the concrete, utterly defeated and surrounded by his own destruction.
