Chapter 7 - The Federal Escort

The captain's eyes were cold and dead as he leveled the weapon at my unconscious mother.

"David has friends everywhere, kid," the captain whispered to me, his finger tightening on the trigger.

My mind raced, realizing that David's corruption reached much further than just the local dispatch center.

I knew I couldn't fight a trained police captain with a broken hand.

I grabbed the heavy pitcher of ice water from the bedside table and hurled it directly at the heart monitor plugged into the wall.

The pitcher smashed the machine, causing sparks to fly and a deafening, continuous emergency alarm to blare through the entire floor.

The captain flinched, distracted by the sudden noise and the flashing red emergency lights in the room.

Before he could correct his aim, the hospital room door was kicked off its hinges with explosive force.

Three men in heavy tactical gear swarmed into the room, tackling the corrupt captain to the linoleum floor.

They disarmed him instantly, pinning his face to the ground while snapping heavy steel cuffs on his wrists.

A woman in a sharp grey suit walked into the room, flashing a gold FBI badge at me.

"I am Agent Carter, and we have been investigating David Vance's criminal syndicate for two years," she explained quickly.

She gently woke Mom up, helping her sit up in the hospital bed while explaining the situation.

"Your 911 call triggered our federal wiretaps, and we have been tracking you since the gas station," Agent Carter said.

Mom held me tightly, sobbing tears of pure relief onto my shoulder.

Agent Carter told us that David was heavily armed and currently barricaded inside his dispatch headquarters.

"We need you to come to the federal building in the city to sign the official witness statements so we can authorize a tactical breach," Carter explained.

We were escorted out of the hospital through a private basement exit, surrounded by armed federal agents.

They placed us in the back of a heavily armored black SUV, securing the heavy steel doors from the outside.

We drove out of the hospital parking lot, joining a convoy of unmarked federal vehicles.

I looked out the tinted windows, watching the small town disappear behind us as we headed toward the city.

The armored SUV was incredibly quiet, isolating us completely from the outside world.

Mom held my good hand, whispering that everything was finally going to be alright.

Suddenly, the driver of our SUV pressed a button on the dashboard, and a thick pane of bulletproof glass rolled up, separating the front seats from the back.

The convoy of federal vehicles in front of us turned left toward the city, but our driver abruptly swerved off the highway, taking a secluded dirt exit.

Our driver was not taking us to the federal building.
