Chapter 1 - The Stolen Escape

Mom did not look back as she walked out of the kitchen.

Her hand was clamped tightly around the car keys she had just taken from my stepfather.

I followed close behind her, cradling my throbbing, purple fingers against my chest.

The hallway felt endlessly long as we moved toward the front door.

My stepfather stood frozen in the kitchen for only a second before his anger finally broke.

"You are not walking out of this house, Sarah!" his voice roared off the walls.

Mom ignored him entirely and reached for the heavy brass handle of the front door.

He lunged forward, grabbing the back of her winter jacket in a violent grip.

Mom spun around instantly, driving her elbow hard into his ribs.

He let out a sharp gasp and stumbled backward, completely shocked by her sudden resistance.

We pushed through the door and ran out into the freezing night air.

My bare feet slapped against the cold concrete driveway as we raced toward her old sedan.

She unlocked the doors, shoved me into the passenger seat, and jumped behind the wheel.

My stepfather burst through the front door, his face twisted in absolute, terrifying rage.

He ran toward the front of the car and slammed both hands onto the hood just as the engine roared to life.

Mom did not hesitate or wait for him to move out of the way.

She slammed the gearshift into reverse and hit the gas pedal with everything she had.

The tires squealed loudly, throwing gravel into the air as the car jerked backward.

My stepfather fell to the side, shouting something we could not hear over the screaming engine.

Mom spun the steering wheel, shifting into drive, and we sped out of the neighborhood.

I sat in the dark passenger seat, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs.

The streetlights flashed across Mom's face, revealing a calm, terrifying determination.

She looked over at me and gently told me to put my seatbelt on.

I clicked it into place, feeling a sudden, overwhelming wave of relief wash over me.

We were finally free from him, and the nightmare was finally behind us.

Mom reached down to the center console to grab her phone and call the police.

Her fingers patted the empty plastic tray, and a deep frown crossed her face.

She reached over to the passenger floorboard and pulled her leather purse onto her lap.

She unzipped the main compartment, digging her hand inside frantically.

The car swerved slightly as her breathing suddenly became shallow and panicked.

"Mom, what is wrong?" I asked, my voice trembling in the dark cabin.

She dumped the entire contents of her purse onto the passenger seat next to me.

Lipstick, old receipts, and a hairbrush tumbled out, but her leather wallet and her cell phone were completely missing.

He had planned this, emptying her purse while we were trapped in the kitchen.

I looked at the dashboard and noticed the orange fuel light was blinking rapidly.

Before I could say anything, the engine gave a violent, metallic shudder.

The headlights flickered off, plunging us into total darkness on the deserted highway.

We coasted to a dead stop on the shoulder of the road, utterly defenseless.

Then, a pair of bright headlights appeared in the rearview mirror, speeding aggressively toward us.
