Chapter 1 - The Silence of the Ruler

What hurt Malik most was not the heavy wooden ruler snapping violently against his bruised knuckles.
It was the cruel, mocking smile on Mr. Harrison’s face as he stood over the trembling student.
"You are nothing but a pathetic charity case, Malik, exactly like your failure of a father," the teacher spat.
The vicious words echoed loudly in front of the entire advanced placement class.
Nobody dared to breathe, let alone look the terrifying man in the eye.
Caleb gripped the edges of his desk, feeling his stomach twist into a painful, suffocating knot.
He had witnessed Mr. Harrison belittle students before, but this level of public humiliation crossed every acceptable line.
He simply could not keep watching his best friend endure this targeted torment.
"That is enough, Mr. Harrison," Caleb stated loudly, pushing his chair back and standing up.
The dead silence of the classroom shattered as thirty terrified students turned to stare at him.
Mr. Harrison slowly lowered the ruler and turned his cold, predatory gaze toward Caleb.
He walked down the narrow aisle, stopping only inches away from Caleb's face.
"You have a flawless academic record, Caleb," Mr. Harrison whispered with venomous calm.
"One more word from you, and Yale will receive a highly revised, failing version of your final transcript."
Caleb froze completely, the immense weight of his entire future suddenly pressing down on his chest.
He had worked tirelessly for four years to secure that Ivy League acceptance letter.
With a single phone call, this vindictive man could destroy everything Caleb had ever earned.
Caleb swallowed his pride, lowered his eyes, and sat back down in total defeat.
He remained completely silent for the rest of the agonizing, tense hour.
When the final bell finally rang, Caleb rushed past the lockers into the empty restroom.
He quickly locked a stall door and pulled his smartphone from his blazer pocket.
He had secretly recorded the entire interaction using a hidden audio application.
His hands shook as he opened the secure folder, preparing to email the damning file to the district superintendent.
He tapped the screen, expecting to hear the playback of the teacher's abusive threats.
Instead, the screen glitched rapidly, flashing a bright red warning across the display.
Right before his horrified eyes, the audio file permanently deleted itself from his local storage.

Before he could even process the sabotage, a completely anonymous text message popped up on his blank screen.
"Nice try, but you are playing a game you cannot possibly win."
