Chapter 4 - The Checkmate

It took exactly ten minutes for the reality to sink in.
The board members, older men who remembered my grandfather, reviewed the documents. The room grew colder by the second. Julian snatched the papers, his eyes darting frantically across the legalese, looking for a loophole that didn't exist.
“This is a forgery,” Julian stammered, though his voice trembled. “My father built this company!”
“Your father nearly bankrupted this company,” I corrected coldly, stepping up to the table. “My grandfather bailed him out. And he left the controlling shares to my daughter. The daughter you refused to claim.”
I looked directly at Valerie. Her smug expression had shattered, replaced by sheer, unadulterated panic. She looked at Julian, realizing that the man she had banked her entire future on was suddenly holding nothing but empty air.
“You wanted to secure the future of your dynasty, Julian,” I said, echoing the exact words he had spoken in my hospital room. “You wanted a clear line of succession. You have it. Clara Croft is the sole heir to this empire. And as her mother and legal proxy, I am restructuring the board.”
“Nora, please,” Julian breathed, his arrogant facade completely crumbling. He reached his hand out toward me, a desperate, pathetic gesture. “We can talk about this. We’re still a family.”

“I was lying in a hospital bed with stitches, and you offered to make me comfortable while you erased us,” I whispered, leaning in close enough that only he could hear, mirroring the nightmare he had put me through. “I am choosing my family. You are fired.”
I turned to the board. “Richard Sterling is hereby removed as Chairman. Julian Sterling is terminated from his position as incoming CEO, effective immediately. Their assets tied to the company will be frozen pending a forensic audit of the last five fiscal years.”
