Chapter 2 - The Empty Room

By 8:00 a.m., the hospital room was completely empty.
Hazel had packed my few belongings with military precision. We bypassed the main lobby, utilizing the discrete maternity exit, and vanished into the crisp morning air before Julian or his parents even finished their breakfast at their luxury hotel downtown.
At 9:30 a.m., Julian returned to the maternity ward.
According to the head nurse—who later recounted the event with thinly veiled satisfaction—Julian arrived flanked by his corporate attorney and Valerie, his assistant and mistress. He carried a leather briefcase containing a generous severance package: a modest condo, a monthly stipend, and a non-disclosure agreement designed to buy my silence forever.
He walked into Room 412, expecting to find a weeping, desperate woman.
Instead, he found a neatly made bed. The only thing left behind was a single item resting in the center of the mattress: the tiny pink and blue striped hospital blanket I had wrapped Clara in, folded perfectly. Pinned to it was a note in my handwriting.
I remembered the moment.

Julian’s frantic calls began at 9:45 a.m. Hazel intercepted every single one, forwarding them directly to Sylvia Croft’s office. When Julian’s lawyer attempted to reach out to threaten me with a custody battle, Sylvia sent a single, devastating reply: “My client is unavailable. All future correspondence will take place at the Sterling Enterprises annual shareholder meeting next month. Be there.”
For the next four weeks, I healed in the fortress of my grandfather’s estate. I learned how to nurse my daughter, how to soothe her cries, and, late at night while she slept against my chest, I learned the exact financial architecture of the company I now owned. I prepared for war.
