Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Ledger

“Yes,” Sylvia confirmed, her voice crackling slightly over the line, though the weight of her words was perfectly clear. “Your grandfather, Arthur, was the silent financier who saved Richard Sterling from bankruptcy thirty years ago. In exchange, Arthur demanded fifty-one percent of Sterling Enterprises’ voting shares. But he placed them in an ironclad, generational trust.”

My breath hitched. The quiet hospital room suddenly felt like the center of a hurricane. “Why didn't anyone know? Why didn't Julian know?”

“Because the trust had a specific vesting trigger,” Sylvia explained, the rustle of heavy paper echoing through the phone. “The shares were to remain dormant, managed by a proxy board, until Arthur’s direct heir—you, Nora—gave birth to your first child. The moment Clara drew her first breath, the trust activated. You are legally the majority owner of the Sterling empire.”

I stared at the ceiling, the stark white tiles blurring. Julian had just stood in this very room and arrogantly declared he was protecting his family's legacy. He didn't realize the legacy didn't belong to him. It belonged to the tiny, sleeping infant he had just discarded.

“Julian’s refusal to sign Clara’s paternity and trust documents...” I started, my mind racing.

“Was the greatest mistake he could have possibly made,” Sylvia finished sharply. “By attempting to legally sever Clara from his family structure, he failed to realize he was severing himself from yours. If he had signed those papers, he would have had joint marital rights to the shares. By refusing, he has left you as the sole, uncontested beneficiary.”

I lowered the phone, my hands shaking—not from the pain of childbirth, but from the terrifying, exhilarating rush of absolute power.

Hazel shifted in her chair, rubbing her eyes. “Nora? What is it?”

I looked at my sister, a slow, cold smile spreading across my face. “Hazel. We aren't going back to the house. We’re going to Grandfather’s estate. I have a company to claim.”
