Chapter 3 - The Secret Debt

Arthur Whitmore did not look like a man who had just paid for a three-million-dollar wedding reception.
He looked like a corporate predator who had just found fresh prey.
He walked past his crying daughter and stopped right next to Adrian.
Adrian immediately let go of my wrist and took a nervous step backward.
Arthur did not even look at his new son-in-law.
He looked directly at me and my sleeping baby.
He politely apologized for the interruption and congratulated me on the birth of my beautiful daughter.
I thanked him cautiously, keeping my arms wrapped protectively around my child.
Arthur then turned his piercing gaze toward Sarah, my attorney.
He asked her if the documents his daughter was holding were legally binding.
Sarah confirmed that the injunction was fully executed and registered with the state courts.
Arthur nodded slowly, processing the information with chilling calculation.
He finally turned to Adrian, who was sweating profusely despite the cool air conditioning of the hospital.
Arthur asked him in a deceptively quiet voice why his financial auditors had not discovered this seventy-million-dollar deficit.
Adrian desperately stammered that it was a temporary cash flow issue that the merger would have instantly resolved.
Arthur reached out and violently grabbed Adrian by the collar of his expensive tuxedo.
He slammed his new son-in-law back against the hospital wall.
Celeste screamed for her father to stop, but Arthur did not even blink.
He told Adrian that nobody lies to the Whitmore family and survives the financial fallout.
He released Adrian, who slumped against the wall gasping for breath.
Arthur straightened his own silk tie and turned back to me.
He offered me a cold, businesslike smile.
He stated that since my veto had officially blocked his acquisition, I was now the primary obstacle in his path.
I stared back at him without showing a single ounce of fear.
I told him that I was not an obstacle, but rather the new controlling owner of the company.
Arthur laughed, a dry, humorless sound that echoed in the quiet room.
He promised me that by tomorrow morning, his lawyers would bury me in so much litigation that I would have to sell my shares just to pay my legal fees.
Sarah stepped between my bed and Arthur Whitmore.
She firmly told him that threatening a recovering mother in a maternity ward was a highly actionable offense.
Arthur ignored Sarah entirely and took a thick checkbook from his tuxedo pocket.
He quickly wrote out a check and tossed it onto my hospital tray.
He said it was a blank check, and I could write any number I wanted as long as I signed over my voting rights tonight.
I looked at the blank check lying next to the NDA Adrian had brought.
I calmly picked up the check and tore it directly in half.
I let the pieces fall onto the floor.
I told Arthur Whitmore that my daughter's legacy was not for sale to corrupt men.
Arthur's eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.
He pulled a sleek smartphone from his pocket and dialed a number.
He instructed the person on the other end of the line to initiate hostile takeover protocol zero.

He hung up the phone and looked at me with absolute malice.
He revealed that he had just instructed his banking partners to call in all of the company's external loans simultaneously.
