Chapter 5 - The Deadly Silence

Victoria stared at the empty glass vial in the guard's hand as if it were a venomous snake.
"That isn't mine!" Victoria shrieked, struggling violently against the guard's grip.
"Someone must have slipped it into my pocket when I was running from the car."
I walked up to her, the absolute betrayal burning a hole straight through my chest.
"You wiped the security footage to frame Frank, and you poisoned our only child for corporate shares?" I growled.
Victoria shook her head frantically, tears of genuine terror streaming down her pale face.
"I didn't poison him, Michael, I brought the antidote!" she screamed.
She pointed a shaking finger at the empty vial.
"The people blackmailing me said the assassin was already inside your house," Victoria pleaded.
"They gave me that vial and told me it was the only thing that could save Noah's life."
Emily stepped forward, looking closely at the blue residue inside the glass.
"She is lying," Emily said with absolute certainty.
"An antidote for this specific neurotoxin would be a clear, peptide-based liquid, not a blue solvent."
Victoria looked at Emily with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"Who the hell are you to tell me about chemistry, you stupid maid?" Victoria spat.
Victoria violently ripped her arm away from the guard and reached for the crystal water pitcher resting on the entryway table.
She poured a glass of water with shaking hands and lifted it to her lips to soothe her raw throat.
"I am telling you the truth, Michael, you have to believe me," she gasped after taking a long drink.
I opened my mouth to demand the names of the people blackmailing her.
But before I could speak a single word, Victoria's eyes rolled into the back of her head.
She dropped the crystal glass, shattering it completely across the marble floor.
She clutched her throat, gasping violently for air as a thick white foam began to spill from her lips.
Victoria collapsed onto the wet floor, convulsing violently for three agonizing seconds before going perfectly, horrifyingly still.
Emily knelt beside the dead woman and smelled the remaining water spilled on the table.

"Cyanide," Emily whispered, looking up at me with wide, fearful eyes.
"The assassin didn't leave the house, Michael, they are actively tying up loose ends."
