Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The flight through the raging thunderstorm was completely terrifying, but Emily handled the aircraft perfectly.
We landed roughly on the secure, reinforced rooftop helipad of Mass General Hospital.
A real trauma team was already waiting for us, having been alerted by my emergency distress beacon.
They rushed Noah onto a gurney and sprinted toward the secure intensive care unit.
I sat in the sterile, brightly lit waiting room while heavily armed state police locked down the entire floor.
Two hours later, the chief of pediatrics walked through the swinging doors with a weary but triumphant smile.
"Your son is completely stable, Mister Carter," the doctor announced.
"The rapid application of ice prevented the toxin from bonding to his nervous system, and we have successfully flushed it from his blood."
A massive, overwhelming wave of pure relief crashed over my exhausted body.
I dropped my face into my hands and wept for the first time in twenty years.
Noah was going to live, and the cartel mercenaries had failed to destroy my legacy.
I stood up, feeling a deep, profound sense of gratitude toward the brave woman who had made this victory possible.
I walked down the quiet hospital corridor and found Emily standing alone by the large glass windows, staring out at the Boston skyline.
"I owe you absolutely everything, Emily," I said softly, stepping up beside her.
"Whatever you want, whatever it costs, it is yours."
I reached out and pulled her into a warm, deeply thankful embrace.
But as I held her, I felt a cold, hard metal object press firmly against my bleeding ribs.
I froze, slowly looking down to see Emily holding the mercenary's suppressed pistol directly against my chest.
"I saved your son because he is innocent, Michael," she whispered, her eyes turning completely dead and cold.
"But you were the man who ordered the drone strike that burned my family alive."
May you like
She pulled the hammer of the gun back with a terrifying click.
"And now, you are going to pay for it."
