Chapter 2 - The Locked Doors

The moment those words left Emily's mouth, the atmosphere in the nursery turned lethal.

I stood up, holding my crying son tightly against my chest.

"Frank," I commanded without taking my eyes off the room.

"Lock down the estate."

Frank immediately tapped the earpiece hidden beneath his suit collar.

"Seal all exits, nobody leaves the property," Frank barked into his microphone.

The heavy steel shutters of the mansion slid down over the windows with a loud, mechanical grinding noise.

The twelve paramedics exchanged terrified glances, suddenly realizing they were trapped inside a fortress.

"We need to transport this child to Mass General immediately," the lead medic argued, taking a step forward.

Frank raised his pistol again, pointing it squarely at the man's chest.

"Nobody is going anywhere until we find out who poisoned my son," I stated coldly.

I turned my attention to Margaret, the night nanny, who was shaking violently in the corner.

She had been the one to prepare the formula.

"Margaret, look at me," I said, my voice dangerously low.

"I swear to God, Mister Carter, I didn't do it!" she screamed, falling to her knees.

"I just mixed the powder from the new tin and brought it straight upstairs!"

Emily took the bottle from the counter and held it up to the light.

"The toxin wasn't in the powder, it was painted on the inside of the bottle nipple," Emily observed calmly.

"Someone applied it right before the feeding."

Margaret gasped, her eyes darting frantically around the room.

"I left the bottle on the kitchen counter for two minutes while I answered the intercom," Margaret stuttered.

"Who was in the kitchen?" I demanded.

Margaret pointed a trembling finger directly at my oldest lieutenant.

"It was Frank," Margaret cried.

"Frank was standing right next to the baby bottles when I came back into the room."

Every armed guard in the nursery instantly turned their weapons toward Frank Miller.
