Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

Damian screamed my name, reaching out to grab me, but I was already moving too fast.

I walked directly into Mark's line of sight, placing my own body between his trembling gun and my crying daughter.

I stared into the eyes of the man I once thought I loved, seeing nothing but a hollow, desperate coward.

I told him in a dangerously calm voice that he would have to shoot me in the heart before I ever let him take my baby again.

Mark's hand shook violently, his resolve faltering as he looked into my completely fearless eyes.

In that microscopic split second of hesitation, Damian took the impossible shot.

The bullet grazed my shoulder, tearing through my shirt with a searing, burning pain before finding its true target.

Mark dropped the gun and collapsed onto the concrete, clutching a fatal wound in his chest.

I dove forward, catching Lily before she could hit the ground, pulling her tiny, warm body against my chest.

I buried my face in her dark curls, crying tears of absolute relief as she clung to my neck.

Damian rushed to my side, applying heavy pressure to my bleeding shoulder while wrapping his other arm around both of us.

He checked Lily frantically, whispering prayers of gratitude when he realized she was completely unharmed.

Suddenly, the engine of the dark SUV roared to life on the loading dock.

My mother slammed her foot onto the gas pedal, tearing out of the warehouse with the bags of syndicate money.

Damian aimed his gun at her tires, but the vehicle was already swerving wildly down the dark access road.

He lowered his weapon, deciding that securing my safety was more important than chasing a pathetic traitor.

As we carried Lily toward the front entrance to escape the horrible building, Damian noticed a strange blinking light on the floor.

It was attached to a massive cluster of C4 explosives hidden beneath the main support pillar.

My mother had triggered a delayed detonator before she sped away, intending to bury all the evidence, including us, under tons of concrete.

The digital timer on the explosive device showed exactly ten seconds remaining.

Damian grabbed me tightly by the waist, clutching Lily securely to his chest, and sprinted full speed toward the shattered window facing the river.
