Chapter 8 - The Desperate Hostage

The warehouse erupted into absolute chaos as Damian's forces swarmed the building from every direction.
Gunfire echoed deafeningly off the concrete walls, forcing my mother and Mark to scramble for cover behind rusted shipping containers.
Damian moved through the crossfire like a predator, completely ignoring the bullets ricocheting around him.
He shot Silas in the kneecap, dropping the traitor to the ground before securing the area around my chair.
With two swift slashes of his combat knife, Damian cut the thick ropes binding my wrists and ankles.
He pulled me into his arms, checking me frantically for injuries while shielding me from the flying debris.
I pointed toward the back exit, screaming over the gunfire that my mother and Mark were trying to escape with the syndicate's money.
Damian grabbed my hand, leading me through the labyrinth of metal crates as his men secured Denny.
We cornered Mark and my mother near a loading dock that overlooked the dark, freezing river.
Damian raised his weapon, demanding that they drop their bags and surrender immediately.
My mother dropped her gun, raising her hands in the air with a terrified, pathetic whimper.
But Mark did not surrender, instead backing slowly toward a dark SUV parked on the dock.
He reached into the open back door of the vehicle and aggressively pulled out a tiny, squirming bundle.
My blood ran completely cold, freezing the air in my lungs.
It was Lily, my beautiful baby girl, crying hysterically in her pink pajamas.
Silas had secretly brought the toddler along in the van to use as ultimate leverage against Damian.
Mark held a heavy pistol directly against Lily's tiny head, his eyes wild with absolute panic.
He screamed that he would blow the child's brains out if Damian didn't drop his weapon and let them leave.
Lily stretched her tiny arms toward me, her tear-soaked face breaking my heart into a million jagged pieces.
She cried out for her mama, the sound echoing agonizingly through the damp warehouse.
Damian froze, his finger hovering over the trigger, completely paralyzed by the risk of hitting the child.
Mark smiled wickedly, realizing he finally had the upper hand over the most feared man in the city.

He ordered my mother to get into the driver's seat of the SUV and prepare to drive away.
Without thinking, I stepped out from behind Damian's protective shadow and walked directly toward the loaded gun.
