Chapter 9 - The Siege Ends

The wailing sound of police sirens deafened Ethan as he shielded his sensitive eyes from the intense spotlights.

Dozens of heavily armed officers were aggressively swarming the perimeter of the dark funeral home.

A loud megaphone clicked on, demanding that everyone exit the building with their hands raised highly in the air.

Claire collapsed onto the wet pavement in sheer relief, pulling Ethan tightly against her shaking chest.

The local police had entirely ignored the jammed cell towers and responded to a panicked 911 call from a passing motorist who heard the gunshot.

Armed tactical units stormed the basement, quickly subduing a blinded Richard and a highly disoriented Mister Vance.

Paramedics rushed toward Ethan and Claire, wrapping them in warm thermal blankets and checking their numerous cuts and bruises.

Ethan watched quietly as police officers aggressively shoved Richard into the back of a heavily armored cruiser.

The evil man who had tried to bury his mother alive was finally going to rot in a federal prison.

An older police detective with a thick gray mustache gently approached Claire with a small notebook in his hand.

"Ma'am, we found extensive financial records hidden in the director's office," the detective explained softly.

"Your husband owed over three million dollars to a dangerous criminal syndicate, and your massive life insurance policy was his only way out."

Claire nodded slowly, tears of pure relief silently washing down her bruised face.

She looked softly at Ethan, her eyes filled with an overwhelming amount of gratitude and unconditional love.

"You saved my life, Ethan," she whispered, kissing the top of his dusty head.

The terrifying nightmare that had started with three faint knocks on a wooden coffin was finally completely over.

But as the police thoroughly processed the crime scene, a young rookie officer emerged from the funeral home holding a locked metal briefcase.
