Chapter 10 - The Light of Day

The morning sun began to rise beautifully over the quiet town, casting a warm golden light across the chaotic crime scene.

Ethan sat comfortably in the back of a warm ambulance, drinking a hot cup of sweet cocoa provided by a friendly medic.

Claire was sitting closely beside him, heavily bandaged but smiling for the first time in what felt like absolute years.

The police had successfully secured the entire facility and arrested every single corrupt employee involved in the elaborate scheme.

Richard and Mister Vance were officially charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, and massive insurance fraud.

The terrifying men would spend the rest of their miserable lives rotting safely behind thick concrete walls.

Ethan felt a massive, heavy weight completely lift off his small shoulders as he watched the police cars drive away.

He knew that he and his mother were finally going to be absolutely okay.

They had completely survived the most terrifying night of their lives, and nobody could ever tear them apart again.

The gray-mustached detective walked over to the ambulance, smiling warmly at the incredibly brave twelve-year-old boy.

"You did a remarkably good job tonight, son," the detective said gently.

Everything was finally perfectly peaceful, and a bright new chapter was officially beginning for the Parker family.

Before leaving, the detective handed Claire the locked metal briefcase recovered from Richard's private office safe.

Claire used Richard's confiscated keychain to unlock the heavy latches, expecting to find more boring financial bank statements.

Instead, the briefcase contained a single, chilling photograph of Ethan sleeping peacefully in his bed just last night.

Pinned carefully to the back of the photograph was a handwritten note stained with fresh blood.

The note simply read, "The husband failed his mission, so we will collect the debt from the boy tomorrow."
