Chapter 8 - The Shield

There was absolutely no time to pull Clare to safety.
There was no time to fire back into the darkness.
Nathaniel threw his entire body over his wife just as the sniper pulled the trigger.
A deafening crack echoed through the massive warehouse.
Nathaniel felt a blinding, agonizing pain tear through his right shoulder.
The high-velocity bullet shattered his collarbone and threw him violently against the steel pillar.
He grunted in excruciating pain but refused to let go of Clare.
He drew his own weapon with his left hand and fired blindly toward the rafters.
A heavy body tumbled from the catwalk and slammed into the concrete floor.
Suddenly, the warehouse doors were completely torn off their hinges.
Andrew's private security team flooded into the building with assault rifles raised.
Blinding strobe lights disoriented the remaining hostile guards.
A chaotic, deafening gunfight erupted in every single direction.
Nathaniel shielded Clare's ears from the terrifying noise.
Through the flashing lights, Nathaniel saw Vanessa desperately running toward a back exit.
She realized her entire operation was falling apart.
Nathaniel forced himself to stand up, blood pouring down his right arm.
"Stay with her!" Nathaniel yelled at Andrew over the gunfire.
Nathaniel stumbled forward, chasing the woman who had nearly destroyed his life.
He cornered Vanessa near the rusted loading docks at the back of the factory.
She had nowhere left to run.
Vanessa turned around with a frantic, unhinged smile.

She held up a small, black remote detonator with a blinking red light.
"Take one more step, and I blow up the entire hospital wing where your mother is sleeping," Vanessa laughed maliciously.
