Chapter 2 - The Black Sedan

Nathaniel stared at the security monitor until his vision blurred.

The man who had supposedly been stalking Vanessa was now kidnapping his bleeding wife.

He pulled out his phone and dialed Vanessa's number.

It went straight to a generic voicemail.

Nathaniel ran out of the hospital and jumped into his Mercedes.

He drove recklessly through the heavy morning traffic.

He pulled up to Vanessa's luxury apartment building and rushed past the doorman.

He rode the elevator to the penthouse and pounded furiously on her door.

There was absolutely no answer.

He used the spare key she had given him weeks ago.

The apartment was completely empty and silent.

Her expensive clothes were gone from the closet.

Her expensive perfumes were missing from the bathroom counter.

On the kitchen island, a single photograph was left behind.

It was a picture of Clare asleep in her hospital bed, taken from the hallway window.

Nathaniel felt a sickening wave of betrayal wash over him.

He quickly opened a tracking application on his phone.

He had secretly installed a GPS locator on Clare's phone years ago for her safety.

A small blue dot pulsed steadily on the digital map.

It was stationary at an abandoned shipping dock in Brooklyn.

Nathaniel pulled a registered handgun from his glove compartment.

He sped across the bridge toward the desolate waterfront.

He found the dark sedan from the photographs parked between two rusted shipping containers.

The engine was still warm to the touch.

He approached the car with his gun drawn and ready.

He yanked the driver's side door open.

The car was entirely empty.

But sitting on the passenger seat was Clare's mobile phone.

The screen was completely shattered into a spiderweb of glass.

Beneath the phone was a massive pool of fresh, dark red blood.
