Chapter 7 - The Darkness

The massive explosion blew out the main electrical breaker box on the wall.
The entire factory plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
The air was thick with gray smoke and the sharp smell of ozone.
Nathaniel scrambled blindly across the debris-covered floor, ignoring the painful ringing in his ears.
"Clare!" he shouted desperately into the darkness.
He heard a weak, wet cough to his left.
He crawled through the smoke and found her lying on her side.
The ropes binding her wrists had miraculously burned away in the flash fire.
"I am here," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the chaos.
Nathaniel gathered her fragile body gently into his arms.
Her surgical wounds had torn completely open from the brutal impact.
She was losing blood incredibly fast.
"You came for me," she sobbed into his shoulder.
"I will never leave you again," Nathaniel promised, tears streaming down his bruised face.
Suddenly, the piercing beam of a tactical flashlight cut through the thick smoke.
Vanessa was standing thirty feet away, coughing violently but still holding her weapon.
"Kill them both!" Vanessa screamed to her remaining guards hiding in the shadows.
Red laser sights began sweeping across the dark room.
Nathaniel tried to drag Clare behind a heavy steel pillar for cover.
He was too slow.
A bright red laser dot settled perfectly on the center of Clare's pale forehead.

A guard in the rafters had locked onto his target.
Nathaniel heard the terrifying, mechanical click of a sniper rifle bolt being pulled back.
