Chapter 9 - The Ashes of the Empire

Patricia’s thumb hovered dangerously over the explosive trigger mechanism.

I knew the blast radius of a military-grade vest would instantly vaporize the entire warehouse.

Clara did not hesitate for a single second.

She raised her assault rifle and fired a precise, single shot directly through Patricia’s wrist.

The impact shattered Patricia's arm, causing the detonator to slip from her bloody fingers.

Before the device could hit the concrete floor and trigger the explosion, Clara dove forward.

She caught the detonator in mid-air, keeping the pressure switch firmly depressed.

Patricia fell to her knees, screaming in agony as she clutched her ruined wrist.

I forced myself up, ignoring the agonizing pain in my chest, and limped over to Patricia.

I picked up her fallen golden gun and pressed it directly against her forehead.

"This is for Madeline," I whispered coldly, and pulled the trigger without a shred of mercy.

The warehouse fell entirely silent except for the sound of my heavy breathing.

Clara carefully secured the detonator with a roll of heavy industrial tape from a nearby workbench.

She helped me walk out of the dark warehouse just as the sound of police sirens filled the distance.

We stole a parked cartel SUV and drove into the quiet Texas night.

We arrived at the abandoned Catholic church on the outskirts of the city just before dawn.

Avery and Sophie ran out of the old sanctuary, crying tears of joy as they threw their arms around me.

I held my family tight, deeply grateful that the horrific nightmare was finally over.

But the joy was immediately shattered when the heavy wooden doors of the church slammed shut behind us.

Standing in the center of the aisle was Alejandro Navarro, the ruthless head of the cartel, surrounded by fifty heavily armed men.
