Chapter 7 - The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

I felt a massive wave of relief wash over me, knowing Clara had outsmarted them again.
But the relief vanished instantly as Patricia pointed a golden pistol directly at Marcus's head.
"Throw the ledger up here, or your best friend loses his brains," Patricia demanded.
I tossed the heavy leather book onto the grated metal catwalk.
One of the cartel guards picked it up, verifying the financial codes before nodding to Patricia.
"You have everything you want," I said coldly, keeping my hands visible.
"Let Marcus go, and you can walk away with the empire."
Patricia smiled wickedly and shook her head.
"I don't just want the empire, Ethan," she whispered, her eyes burning with hatred.
"I want you to suffer the way I suffered when you took this territory from my father."
She revealed that she was actually the secret daughter of the previous crime boss I had overthrown a decade ago.
Everything she had done was part of a long, meticulous plan for absolute revenge.
"I even paid that delivery driver to run the red light two years ago," Patricia confessed casually.
"Your sweet, innocent wife Madeline died because I ordered it."
My entire world stopped spinning.
The grief I had carried for two years instantly transformed into a blinding, uncontrollable rage.
I drew a hidden combat knife from my sleeve and hurled it with lethal precision.
The blade struck the guard holding the ledger directly in the throat, sending the book tumbling back down to the ground floor.
Patricia screamed in anger and pulled the trigger of her golden gun.

But she didn't shoot Marcus.
Marcus suddenly broke his own zip-ties, pulled a hidden weapon, and shot me squarely in the chest.
