Chapter 9 - The Ambush

I kicked the stairwell door open and ran down to the second floor as fast as I could.
Gunfire erupted from the recovery wing, echoing loudly through the quiet hospital corridors.
I peeked around the corner and saw Carlos’s mercenaries shooting at the medical staff.
My mother's private guards were pinned down behind a heavy nursing station, completely outgunned.
I raised my pistol and fired three precise shots, dropping two of the mercenaries instantly.
Carlos turned toward me, his scarred face twisting into a mask of absolute fury.
He ordered his remaining men to suppress my position with heavy automatic fire.
Bullets shredded the drywall around me, forcing me to dive into an empty supply closet.
I crawled through the dust and medical debris, desperately looking for a way to flank them.
I climbed into the ceiling air duct and shimmied quietly over the hallway.
I dropped down directly behind Carlos and slammed the butt of my gun into the back of his head.
He staggered forward, dropping his assault rifle to the polished linoleum floor.
I kicked the rifle away and aimed my weapon directly at his chest.
I demanded to know if Maria was working with him this entire time.
Carlos wiped the blood from his neck and let out a harsh, cruel laugh.
He told me that Maria was a pathetic, weak woman who didn't know anything about his real job.
He confessed that he was here to kill her because she had stolen Victoria's most valuable asset.
I frowned, asking him what a poor housekeeper could possibly steal from a billionaire heiress.
Carlos smiled a wicked, terrifying smile that showed off his gold teeth.
He revealed that Lily was not Maria's daughter at all.
Lily was the illegitimate child of Victoria's father, making the little girl the true heir to their entire empire.
Maria had kidnapped the child to save her from being murdered by Victoria's jealous mother.
Before I could process this massive revelation, a cold metal barrel pressed hard against the back of my skull.

I slowly raised my hands and turned my head to see who had outflanked me.
Standing behind me with a shotgun was my own head of security, Marcus.
