Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Marcus ordered me to drop my weapon and kick it away.
I had no choice but to comply, watching my pistol slide across the bloody floor.
Carlos picked up his rifle, aiming it directly at my face with a triumphant smirk.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the recovery wing flew open behind them.
Maria stood there holding a defibrillator paddle in each hand, her eyes blazing with maternal rage.
She jammed the fully charged paddles directly into Marcus’s back and pulled the triggers.
Marcus convulsed violently as a massive electrical shock stopped his heart instantly.
He collapsed onto the floor, dead before his body even hit the tiles.
Carlos spun around in shock, completely unprepared for his meek wife to attack.
I used the distraction to tackle Carlos to the ground, punching him repeatedly until he was unconscious.
Federal agents finally stormed the building, responding to the encrypted distress signal I had sent earlier.
They arrested Carlos and his surviving men, dragging them away in heavy iron chains.
I pulled Maria into my arms, hugging her and Lily so tightly I thought my chest would burst.
A week later, Victoria and her entire family were indicted on hundreds of federal charges.
My mother made a full recovery, and my company was completely secure from the hostile takeover.
I proposed to Maria under the old oak tree at my estate, and she happily said yes.
I hugged my new family, feeling a profound peace I had searched for my entire life.
My company was safe, the villains were in prison, and I had everything I ever wanted.
Then my secure phone vibrated with a call from the FBI lead investigator.
He warned me that the DNA tests on Carlos Alvarez had just come back from the lab.
The man we captured was not Carlos Alvarez, but a hired decoy who had undergone extensive plastic surgery.

I lowered the phone slowly, looking toward the picnic blanket where my beautiful fiancée sat.
Maria was smiling at me sweetly while emptying a small vial of clear liquid into my iced tea.
