Chapter 9 - The Collision

Liam looked like a terrifying nightmare, his expensive navy suit completely shredded and scorched by the explosion.
The left side of his face was covered in angry, blistering burns, his eyes wide with absolute, unhinged madness.
He raised the heavy assault rifle, pointing it directly at Norah's chest as she desperately held his dying brother.
He screamed that she had ruined his perfect plan, and now he was going to make her watch Declan bleed to death.
Norah gently lowered Declan to the cold concrete floor behind a large concrete support pillar.
She knew she had absolutely no weapons left, completely out of bullets and out of options.
Liam began walking slowly toward the pillar, firing short, terrifying bursts into the concrete to force her out into the open.
Norah looked frantically around the dimly lit garage, her eyes locking onto a heavy construction pickup truck parked nearby.
The keys were dangling carelessly from the ignition, left behind by the careless renovation crew.
She looked down at Declan, pressing a swift, desperate kiss to his cold, pale forehead.
Before Liam could round the pillar, Norah sprinted entirely across the open lane, diving headfirst through the open window of the truck.
Bullets shattered the concrete right behind her heels, missing her by absolute fractions of an inch.
She scrambled into the driver's seat, turning the key and slamming the heavy gear shift into drive.
The massive diesel engine roared to life, echoing violently off the low concrete ceiling of the garage.
Liam turned toward the sound, raising his assault rifle and firing directly at the approaching windshield.
Glass exploded inward, showering Norah in sharp, deadly fragments as she completely ducked her head beneath the dashboard.
She pressed the gas pedal entirely to the floor, steering blindly by pure memory of where Liam was standing.
The massive truck surged forward with terrifying momentum, acting as a four-ton, unstoppable battering ram.
A sickening, heavy thud resonated through the frame of the truck as it struck Liam at full speed.
The truck crashed violently into the reinforced concrete wall of the exit ramp, deploying the airbags instantly.
A heavy silence instantly swallowed the garage, broken only by the hissing of the radiator and the dripping of vital fluids.
Norah slowly raised her bleeding head from the steering wheel, looking through the shattered windshield.
Liam was completely crushed between the heavy steel bumper and the concrete wall, entirely dead.

She stumbled out of the ruined truck, clutching her bruised ribs, and rushed back to the pillar where she had left Declan.
Declan’s eyes were completely closed, his chest perfectly still, and he was no longer breathing.
