Chapter 5 - The Ghost in the Machine

Elias knew Clara better than she knew herself. He knew her brilliance, but he also knew her impatience. She hated the tediousness of structural engineering; she only cared about the aesthetic.

He sobered up. He cashed out his meager remaining 401k and bought a high-powered server, setting it up in his dingy living room. If he couldn't beat Sterling's lawyers in a courtroom, he would beat Clara in the shadows. He began digging into the municipal public records, cross-referencing the zoning permits for The Apex with the original blueprints she had drawn up in that diner years ago.

It took three months of relentless, sleepless work. But at 4:00 AM on a rainy Thursday, he found it.

To appease Sterling's brutal budget cuts, Clara had authorized a swap in the core structural steel. She had replaced the high-grade, load-bearing alloys Elias had originally funded with a cheaper, imported substitute. It was legal under a glaring loophole in the city's outdated building codes, but fundamentally flawed. If a high-wind storm—a "Chicago special"—hit The Apex at the wrong angle, the upper thirty floors would experience catastrophic swaying. It wouldn't collapse, but it would be deemed completely uninhabitable.

Clara had built her throne on toothpicks. And she was taking the company public in exactly sixty days.
