Chapter 10 - Checkmate

Six months later.

The Chicago River was half-frozen, the wind howling through the concrete canyons of the city. Elias pushed open the heavy glass door of the diner. It was the same one. The same cracked vinyl seats. The same dim lighting.

Clara was sitting in the corner booth.

She wore a plain wool coat. The auburn hair that had once been styled for magazines was tied back in a messy knot. The crimson gowns were gone. Sterling had divorced her the moment the federal indictments came down, leaving her as the sole scapegoat for the structural fraud. She was facing bankruptcy and potential prison time. The Apex stood empty, a hollow monument trapped in endless municipal litigation.

Elias slid into the booth across from her.

She didn't look up immediately. When she did, the fierce fire in her eyes was extinguished. Only exhaustion remained.

"Did you come to gloat?" her voice was a raspy whisper.

"No," Elias said, signaling the waitress for two coffees. "I came to look at you."

"Are you satisfied, Elias?" A single tear tracked down her pale cheek. "You destroyed me. I have absolutely nothing."

Elias looked out the window at the skyline they had once promised to conquer together. He felt no triumph. No joy. Just a heavy, profound emptiness. He realized then that revenge didn't rebuild what was broken; it merely leveled the playing field so they could both sit in the rubble.

"You destroyed yourself, Clara," Elias said quietly, standing up from the booth. He laid a twenty-dollar bill on the table to cover the coffees. "I just turned on the lights."

He walked out of the diner, stepping into the biting Chicago winter. He didn't look back. The empire was gone, but for the first time in years, Elias Thorne was finally free.
