Chapter 3 - The Missing Clause

The betrayal wasn't born of sudden hatred; it was born of cold, surgical ambition. Elias discovered the discrepancy during a routine audit. A subsidiary company, entirely owned by Clara and Richard Sterling, had been siphoning intellectual property from the Vance-Thorne firm. The revolutionary patents Elias had funded were legally bleeding out of his hands.
He confronted her in the boardroom. The sprawling mahogany table stretched between them like a battlefield.
"You transferred the patents," Elias said, his voice deadly quiet. "You signed them over to Sterling Holdings."
Clara didn't look up from her laptop. "It was necessary for the merger, Elias. The board demanded collateral."
"There is no board, Clara! It’s just us!"
She finally looked up, and for the first time, Elias saw nothing in her eyes. No warmth, no love. Just a sheer, polished wall of ambition. "Read the operating agreement we signed last year, Elias. Page forty-two, subsection C. In the event of a structural reorganization, majority shareholders hold executive power."
Elias felt the floor drop out from under him. "You own fifty-one percent," he whispered. He had given her that extra one percent as a romantic gesture on her birthday, a symbol that he trusted her to lead.
"Sterling injected capital," Clara said flatly. "I diluted your shares. You're out, Elias. I've already drafted your severance package."

He stared at the woman he loved. "You're stealing the company."
"I'm securing the empire," she corrected, turning back to her screen. "Leave your keycard on the desk."
