Chapter 2 - The Altar of Deceit

Valeria froze, feeling the cold steel of his threat pierce through her remaining courage.
For ten years, Mauricio had carefully constructed a financial cage around her family, investing heavily in her father’s failing distribution business.
He knew exactly which strings to pull to make her dance to his horrific tune.
Valeria looked over Mauricio's shoulder and saw her father sitting in the second row, wiping sweat from his forehead.
Her father looked absolutely terrified, silently begging her not to ruin the fragile empire he had built.
Mauricio pulled back, flashing a brilliant, charismatic smile to the horrified audience.
"She caught her dress on a loose nail in the heavy doors," Mauricio announced smoothly to the murmuring crowd.
"But my beautiful bride is incredibly brave, and our love is far stronger than a ruined piece of fabric."
A few polite claps rippled through the audience, entirely manipulated by his effortless charm.
He gripped Valeria's arm with bruising force and practically dragged her up the final steps to the altar.
The elderly priest cleared his throat nervously, completely unsure of how to proceed with the tense ceremony.
He began reading the traditional vows, his voice shaking slightly under the heavy, suffocating atmosphere.
Valeria stared at the massive golden cross above the altar, her mind racing desperately for a way out.
She had spent half a year designing her tech startup, working late into the night, only to realize Mauricio secretly owned fifty percent of her shares.
If she walked away, he would take everything she had built and everything her father owned.
"Do you, Valeria, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?" the priest finally asked.
The silence in the church was absolutely deafening.
Mauricio squeezed her hand so hard that her knuckles turned stark white, a silent demand for her obedience.
Valeria slowly turned her head and looked directly into Mauricio’s cold, lifeless eyes.
"No," she said clearly, the word ringing out like a gunshot in the silent church.
Before Mauricio could even react, the heavy side doors of the church violently burst open.

A tall man in a dark charcoal suit walked in, holding a thick manila envelope high in the air.
"She doesn't have to marry you to save her father, Mauricio, because I just bought all of your debts," the stranger announced.
