Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Chalice

The grand dining room was a masterpiece of intimidating luxury, illuminated only by dozens of flickering silver candelabras.
Isabella sat rigidly at one end of the impossibly long mahogany table, wearing a striking crimson dress that felt like armor.
Julian sat across from her, sweating profusely in a cheap rented tuxedo, desperately avoiding her terrified gaze.
Sebastian sat at the head of the table, cutting his rare steak with the calm precision of a seasoned surgeon.
The heavy silence in the massive room was deafening, broken only by the sharp clinking of expensive silverware.
Sebastian signaled the head butler to pour a very special, incredibly rare vintage wine for his honored guest.
He raised his crystal glass high, offering a sinister, double-meaning toast to the enduring strength of pure bloodlines.
Isabella felt physically sick, her hands shaking so badly she could not even bring her water glass to her lips.
Julian, desperately trying to keep up the charade of a polite business meeting, quickly drank half of his wine.
Sebastian smiled warmly at Julian, casually asking him if he believed that parasites deserved to live off the hard work of better men.
Julian frowned in confusion, opening his mouth to formulate a polite, diplomatic answer to the strange question.
Suddenly, a violent, hacking cough completely interrupted Julian's words.
He dropped his crystal glass, shattering it against the floor, as he grabbed frantically at his own burning throat.
Thick, dark blood began pouring profusely from Julian's nose and mouth, staining his white tuxedo shirt.
He collapsed heavily onto the expensive dining table, convulsing violently as he gasped desperately for air.
Isabella screamed in pure horror, pushing her heavy chair back and trying to run to the father of her child.
Sebastian calmly raised his hand, signaling two massive armed guards who immediately stepped out from the deep shadows.

He casually wiped a small drop of wine from his lips with a linen napkin.
"Please take the trash out the back door, and make sure it is buried deep," Sebastian ordered softly.
