Chapter 1 - The Amber Vial

Marcus's eyes shifted from his mother's trembling hands down to the edge of the hospital mattress.
Tucked beneath the fold of Chloe's pale blue blanket lay a tiny, unmarked amber glass vial.
Beside it was an uncapped plastic syringe with a fine metal needle resting on the sheet.
Eleanor saw where he was looking and made a frantic lunge toward the bed to snatch it.
Marcus blocked her with one powerful arm, driving her back against the wall.
"Get your hands off me, Marcus!" Eleanor hissed, her voice shaking with venomous desperation.
Nurse Sarah froze in the doorway, her eyes wide as she registered the syringe.
Chloe's small fingers tightened around her teddy bear's torn ear.
"Daddy, she told me it was special candy juice to make me sleep forever," Chloe sobbed.
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face as a suffocating chill gripped his chest.
He carefully picked up the vial using the cuff of his tuxedo jacket to avoid smudging any fingerprints.
The liquid inside was clear, thick, and completely unlabeled.
Eleanor smoothed down her burgundy blouse, trying desperately to regain her aristocratic composure.
"She is confused from the fever, Marcus," Eleanor said smoothly.
"I was simply checking her blankets when she threw a childish tantrum and fell."
Marcus did not blink.
He pulled his phone from his pocket and hit speed dial for his private head of security.
"Dominic, seal the fourth floor of Saint Jude's right now," Marcus commanded into the receiver.
"Nobody enters or leaves this wing without my personal authorization."
Eleanor's lips curved into a wicked, patronizing smile.
"You think you can lock down this hospital, Marcus?" she whispered coldly.
"Check Chloe's chart before you make a fool of yourself in front of the staff."
Nurse Sarah rushed to the digital terminal on the wall and pulled up Chloe's electronic medical file.
The nurse gasped, covering her mouth with a trembling hand as the screen refreshed.
Chloe had not been admitted for seasonal pneumonia as Marcus had been told two hours ago.
