Chapter 9 - The Cleansing Fire

The aftermath was a hurricane of federal agents, paramedics, and flashing cameras. The FBI stormed the estate in full tactical gear, but they found no resistance. I handed over a silver platter of evidence: the audio files, the hitman's confession, the platinum legacy data proving the financial theft, and six of the most wanted corporate criminals in the country beautifully zip-tied in the penthouse.

I stood in the lobby, a paramedic wrapping a fresh bandage around my ribs, watching Arthur being frog-marched out the shattered front doors in handcuffs. He didn't look at me. He kept his head down, a broken, pathetic shadow of the patriarch he pretended to be.

Sylvia was dragged out next, screaming obscenities at the press gathered behind the police barricades.

Agent Reynolds, the lead FBI investigator, approached me with a look of profound respect. "Ms. Kaelen, I’ve been hunting Marcus’s syndicate for a decade. What you did here tonight... you dismantled an international cartel with a hotel keycard."

"It's a platinum founder's card, Agent," I corrected softly, slipping the heavy gold badge back into my pocket. "And I was just taking out the trash."

"We'll need you to come to the station to give a full statement," Reynolds said gently, eyeing my injuries. "But maybe after you visit a real hospital."

"Give me one hour," I said. "I have a hotel to run."

As the police cleared out, I summoned the remaining, terrified staff to the grand atrium. They stood trembling, expecting to be fired or arrested.

"Sylvia is gone. Arthur is gone," I announced, my voice carrying over the marble floors. "Any employee who knowingly aided them has been handed to the FBI. For the rest of you... tomorrow morning, Kaelen Holdings begins again. We are severing all ties to the shadow corporations. We are restoring the philanthropic trusts my father established. If you want to work for a criminal syndicate, there is the door. If you want to help me rebuild a legacy of honor, I will double your salaries effective immediately."

The silence hung for a moment before Vance, nursing a bruised head, began to clap. Slowly, the rest of the staff joined in, the applause echoing through the atrium, washing away the stench of the night's horrors.
