Chapter 1 - The Iron Cage

The silence in the atrium was absolute, heavy enough to crush bone. The glowing silver text on the biometric screens—VICTORIA ROSE KAELEN: PRINCIPAL SHAREHOLDER—bathed the terrified faces of the staff in an eerie, metallic light.

Arthur’s face, usually a mask of aristocratic superiority, melted into a portrait of raw panic. He took a step backward toward the open penthouse elevator, but I was already moving. Pain ripped through my shredded shoulder, hot and blinding, but adrenaline was a potent drug.

"Seal the doors!" I screamed, my voice echoing off the vaulted glass ceilings. "Initiate Protocol Omega! No one enters. No one leaves."

For a split second, the executive guards hesitated. They looked at Arthur, the man who signed their paychecks for the last five years, and then back at the screens. The Kaelen legacy system didn't just control the doors; it controlled the payroll, the legal immunity, the very heartbeat of the empire.

The head of security, a towering ex-marine named Vance, unclipped his radio. He looked at my bleeding face, then at the platinum card in my bloody palm. He made his choice.

"Lock it down," Vance ordered into his radio.

Heavy steel blast doors, designed for hurricane protocols, slammed down over the grand entrance. The revolving glass doors were sealed behind six inches of reinforced titanium. The Kaelen Estate was no longer a luxury resort; it was a fortress. And I had just locked my father’s murderer inside with me.

Sylvia, the hotel director who had dragged me like garbage minutes prior, fell to her knees. Her perfectly tailored red suit was suddenly a glaring target. "Victoria... Ms. Kaelen," she stammered, tears ruining her expensive mascara. "I didn't know. Arthur told me you were an imposter trying to steal the company secrets! He swore to me—"

"Save it, Sylvia," I hissed, pressing a hand to my bleeding forehead. I looked at Arthur, who was now surrounded by four guards leveling stun-rifles at his chest.

"You're making a mistake, Victoria," Arthur said, trying to smooth his tie with trembling hands. "That audio file is a deepfake. It’s corporate espionage. You’ve been through a traumatic accident, sweetheart. Let’s get you to a hospital."

"The only place I'm going," I said, walking slowly toward him, leaving drops of my own blood on the pristine white marble, "is the executive boardroom. And you are going to sit across from me until the police arrive to scrape what's left of your dignity off the floor. Vance, take them up."
