Chapter 8 - The Sabotage

Elena was escorted off the property by armed security an hour later. She drove back to her modest apartment, her hands gripping the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white.
They thought she was just a poor school teacher they could bully. They underestimated her.
The next morning, Elena didn't go to the police, and she didn't call a lawyer. She knew Richard could tie them up in litigation for decades. She needed leverage. She needed a weapon.
She began investigating Julian. If he was so desperate to protect his inheritance, he had something to hide. Elena spent a week pulling public records, shell company registrations, and analyzing the corporate filings of the Van Der Beek foundation.
Her breakthrough came late one night. She found a massive discrepancy in the foundation’s charitable donations. Millions of dollars earmarked for a children’s hospital in Boston had been quietly funneled into a Cayman Islands LLC. The LLC was registered to a proxy lawyer, but the signature on the authorization form belonged to Julian Van Der Beek.
He was embezzling from his own family's charity to fund his extravagant lifestyle and cover massive gambling debts in Macau.
Elena printed the documents. She had her smoking gun.

Meet me at the Brooklyn Bridge at midnight. Come alone.
