Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

Two weeks later, the ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was blinding with the flashes of a hundred cameras. The press conference had been billed as the most shocking corporate announcement of the decade.
Elena stood behind the velvet curtain, wearing a sleek, tailored navy suit. She looked powerful. She looked untouchable.
On the stage, Richard Van Der Beek gripped the podium, looking visibly aged. Julian stood beside him, pale and sweating.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard said, his voice echoing through the silent room. "Thirty years ago, a tragedy tore my family apart. Today, by a miracle of fate, that tragedy has been undone. It is my profound honor to introduce... my daughter. Chloe Van Der Beek."
The room erupted. Elena stepped out from behind the curtain, walking into the blinding light.
She shook Richard’s hand, putting on a perfect, practiced smile for the cameras. She saw the absolute hatred burning in his eyes, but he couldn't do a thing about it. She owned them now.
Later that evening, after the market closed with Van Der Beek stock surging on the miraculous PR wave, Elena sat alone in her new corner office on the top floor of the corporate tower.
She pulled the silver rattle from her purse and set it on the massive glass desk.
She had conquered the monsters who birthed her. She had taken back the empire that was rightfully hers. But as she looked out over the glittering skyline of Manhattan, she didn't feel like Chloe Van Der Beek.
She picked up her phone and looked at a photo of Margaret—the woman who had stolen her, the woman who had loved her, the criminal who had raised her.
Elena realized the profound, tragic irony of her existence. Margaret was right. By kidnapping her, she had saved her from becoming one of them. Elena had the Van Der Beek power, but she possessed Margaret's ruthless, fiercely protective heart.
She poured a glass of water, raising it to the window.

"Thanks, Mom," Elena whispered into the quiet office.
She set the glass down, opened her laptop, and began the work of tearing the Van Der Beek empire apart from the inside.
