Chapter 1 - The Dying Whisper

The rhythmic hiss of the ventilator stuttered. Elena bolted upright in the uncomfortable plastic chair, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Margaret’s eyes fluttered open. They were cloudy, stripped of their usual fiery vitality, yet locked onto Elena with terrifying urgency. The older woman’s frail hand, bruised purple from IV lines, twitched against the crisp white sheets. She was trying to pull the oxygen mask away from her face.
"Mom, don't," Elena pleaded, rushing to the bedside and gently pressing her mother’s hand down. "You need the oxygen. The doctor said you have to rest."
Margaret shook her head with shocking violence for someone so weak. She clawed at the mask again until Elena, terrified by the sudden panic in the monitors, carefully lifted the plastic edge.
"The... the attic," Margaret wheezed, her voice sounding like dry leaves crushing together. "Cedar chest. False bottom."
Elena frowned, stroking her mother’s damp forehead. "Mom, shh. It’s okay. We don’t need to worry about the house right now."
"Listen to me!" Margaret gasped, coughing violently. The EKG machine spiked in erratic, frantic waves. "A brass key. First National Bank. Box 408."
Tears welled in Margaret’s eyes, spilling over her deep wrinkles. "I’m sorry, Ellie. I’m so sorry. I just wanted... I just wanted a little girl."
"Mom, you have me. I’m right here," Elena whispered, her own tears blurring her vision.
Margaret’s grip suddenly tightened with impossible strength. Her nails dug into Elena’s wrist. "You are not mine," she rasped, her eyes wide with a terrifying clarity. "Find the box. Forgive me."

The long, agonizing hiss of the ventilator returned, but Margaret’s eyes rolled back. The EKG monitor leveled out into a terrifying, steady tone.
Nurses rushed in, pulling Elena backward, shouting medical codes. But Elena couldn't hear them. Her mother's final words echoed in her mind like a deafening siren: You are not mine.
