Chapter 6 - Ghosts in the Machine

Rex stared at the photograph until his vision blurred.

The man in the picture was undeniably his father and he looked perfectly healthy.

"He faked his death in prison," Hale explained with a strained but steady voice.

"He discovered what his father Silas had done to my son."

"He wanted to make amends and help me bring Silas down."

Rex crushed the photograph in his fist as anger boiled over his confusion.

"Where is he now?" Rex demanded as he grabbed Hale by the collar of his ruined shirt.

Betty stepped forward and aimed her pistol squarely at Rex’s head.

"Let him go," she warned coldly.

Hale raised a hand to signal Betty to lower her weapon.

"I don't know where he is," Hale admitted sadly.

"He went deep undercover to infiltrate the new organization and he never came back."

Rex let go of the old man and paced the small medical bay like a caged tiger.

"So Silas is still alive," Rex concluded as the pieces finally fell into place.

"Yes," Hale said as he sat up slowly.

"And he has taken control of the Silver Hawk division."

Suddenly the bunker’s main power violently shut off.

Red emergency lights bathed the concrete walls in an eerie glow.

An alarm began to blare and echoed deafeningly in the tight space.

"They found us," Betty said as she rushed to a bank of security monitors.

The screens showed dozens of heavily armed mercenaries surrounding the boulder up top.

Agent Miller was leading them and holding a massive explosive charge.

"They are going to blow the hatch," Betty panicked while typing frantically on a keyboard.

"There is a secondary escape tunnel through the armory," Hale said as he winced in pain.

"Help me up, Rex."

Rex threw the old man’s arm over his broad shoulder.

They hurried toward the heavy steel door of the armory at the back of the bunker.

Just as they reached it a massive explosion shook the earth above them.

Concrete dust rained down as the main hatch caved in completely.

Mercenaries began repelling down into the bunker as lasers cut through the darkness.

Betty laid down suppressive fire and killed the first two men to touch the ground.

Rex kicked the armory door open and dragged Hale inside.

Betty backed in right after them and slammed the heavy vault door shut before spinning the lock.

Safe for a brief moment they turned around to look at the escape tunnel.

Instead of a dark passage they found Silas Vance sitting calmly in a leather chair while holding a detonator.
