Chapter 2 - The Treason of Blood

The diner erupted into absolute chaos as the waitresses screamed.

Rex froze and was entirely unsure of what was happening before his eyes.

The old man did not even blink at the gun pressed to his head.

"Agent Miller, you always were too impatient for field work," the old man said softly.

Miller’s hand trembled slightly but his grip remained firm on the trigger.

"The directive changed ten minutes ago, Mr. Hale," Miller whispered with sweat beading on his forehead.

"You are no longer the commander of the Silver Hawk division."

The other agents in the room unholstered their weapons and aimed them at both Hale and the bikers.

Rex gripped the stolen wooden cane tight as his mind raced.

This was supposed to be a simple shakedown of a weak old man.

Now he was caught in the middle of a high-level government assassination.

"If you pull that trigger you will start a war you cannot win," Hale warned.

Miller sneered and cocked the hammer of the pistol.

"The war is already over," Miller replied.

Suddenly Rex felt a strange surge of protective anger over the patch on his collar.

He didn't know this old man but he knew the legend of the Silver Hawk.

His grandfather had told him it stood for absolute loyalty.

Without thinking Rex swung the heavy wooden cane with all his might.

The solid oak struck Agent Miller’s wrist with a sickening crack.

The gun fired wildly into the ceiling and sent plaster raining down on the booths.

Hale instantly dropped to the floor and swept Miller’s legs out from under him.

"Bikers, move!" Rex roared to his gang.

The leather-clad thugs pulled their own smuggled firearms and flipped tables for cover.

A terrifying firefight broke out in the middle of the diner.

Hale grabbed Rex by the jacket and dragged the massive biker toward the kitchen doors.

"Why did you save me?" Hale yelled over the gunfire.

Rex kicked open the swinging doors.

"Because you know who my family is!" Rex shouted back.

They sprinted through the kitchen as bullets tore through the stainless steel refrigerators.

Hale punched a code into a hidden panel on his wristwatch.

"We need to get to my safehouse," Hale said as blood dripped from a graze on his shoulder.

They burst out the back door into the alleyway.

A black unmarked van was waiting with its engine running.

The side door slid open to reveal a sniper aiming a rifle directly at Rex’s chest.

The sniper pulled the tactical mask off her face.

It was the diner waitress who always poured Hale's coffee.
