Chapter 9 - The Shattering

Water exploded onto the catwalk with the force of a freight train.
Sarah was knocked off her feet, tumbling backward onto the steel grating as hundreds of gallons of freezing saltwater washed over her. The sound was deafening—a chaotic roar of rushing water, tearing metal, and blaring emergency alarms bathed in flashing red strobe lights.
"Sarah! Grab my hand!" James yelled. He was clinging to a structural support beam, fighting against the torrent of water pouring from the breached tank.
Sarah fought through the deluge, her sneakers slipping on the wet metal. She lunged forward, locking her fingers around James’s wrist. He hauled her up against the pillar just as the water level on the catwalk rose to their knees.
Below them, the situation was catastrophic. The breach was widening.
Michael had been caught directly in the initial blowout. The sheer force of the water had swept him off the catwalk and down into the lower reservoir pit. He was thrashing in the dark, rising water, screaming for help.
And he wasn't alone.
The breach was large enough for the marine life to escape. The water churning in the reservoir was suddenly broken by the sharp, gray dorsal fin of a highly agitated, ten-foot tiger shark.
"Help me!" Michael shrieked, desperately trying to claw his way up the slippery concrete wall of the pit. "Sarah! Pull me up!"
Sarah looked down at the man who had stalked her, imprisoned her sister, murdered her, and planned to kill her. For a split second, she felt a surge of pity. But as the shark circled closer, thrashing violently in the shallow, confined water of the pit, James pulled Sarah away.

"We have to go, now! The whole tank is going to collapse!" James yelled over the roar of the water.
They didn't look back. They scrambled up the emergency stairwell, the sounds of Michael's screams abruptly cut short by a violent splash, followed by absolute, terrifying silence in the pit below.
