Chapter 5 - Fire and Rain

The warehouse erupted into absolute chaos as the heavily armed soldiers stormed the room.

Dante did not hesitate for a single second, flipping the heavy mahogany coffee table over to create a makeshift barricade.

"Get down and cover her ears!" Dante screamed as he began firing his weapon at the advancing intruders.

I dragged Lily to the floor, curling my body over hers to shield her from the deafening crossfire.

The sound of automatic gunfire was terrifying, shredding the expensive furniture and shattering the glass fixtures above us.

Dante was an incredibly skilled marksman, dropping three of the syndicate soldiers before they even knew what hit them.

But we were hopelessly outnumbered, and Dante’s ammunition was rapidly depleting.

Victoria Sterling casually walked out the back exit, leaving her men to finish the messy execution.

"We cannot stay pinned down here forever, Clara," Dante yelled over the continuous roar of gunfire.

He pointed toward a narrow ventilation shaft near the floor on the opposite side of the room.

"I am going to provide cover fire, and you are going to run for that grate with the kid," Dante ordered.

I shook my head wildly, refusing to leave him behind to die alone in this warehouse.

"Do it now, or none of us survive!" Dante roared, slamming a fresh magazine into his pistol.

He stood up entirely, exposing himself to the enemy, and began laying down a massive barrage of suppressive fire.

I grabbed Lily into my arms and ran faster than I had ever run in my entire life.

Bullets zipped past my head, burying themselves into the brick wall with terrifying, explosive cracks.

We reached the ventilation shaft, and I kicked the loose metal grate completely off its hinges.

I shoved Lily inside the narrow tunnel and squeezed in right behind her just as a bullet grazed my shoulder.

I gasped in pain, but the sheer adrenaline completely masked the burning sensation.

We crawled through the dark, dusty ductwork for what felt like an eternity.

The sounds of the brutal shootout slowly faded away as we moved deeper into the industrial ventilation system.

We finally tumbled out of an exterior grate, landing heavily in the muddy grass outside the building.

The freezing Boston rain was pouring down, soaking through my thin gray uniform in seconds.

I looked back at the warehouse, praying that Dante had somehow found a way to survive the onslaught.

Suddenly, the screeching of tires echoed through the rainy alleyway as a white hospital ambulance aggressively swerved around the corner.

The ambulance skidded to a halt directly in front of us, its bright red emergency lights flashing wildly in the darkness.

The back doors flew open, revealing Dr. Brooks standing over a rolling medical stretcher.

And lying on that stretcher, pale but entirely conscious, was Adrian Vale holding a massive assault rifle.
