Chapter 1 - The Scent of Betrayal

Dr. Brooks walked through the sliding surgical doors with a terrifying expression on her pale face.
She pulled her blue surgical mask down and looked directly at Mason Reed.
Her hands were trembling so violently that she had to grip the edge of a nearby medical cart to steady herself.
"Someone intentionally introduced a highly concentrated bacterial strain directly into Mr. Vale's intravenous line."
The words hung in the sterile hospital air like a heavy physical weight.
This was not a random post-surgical complication.
This was a deliberate assassination attempt inside the most secure wing of the entire building.
Mason immediately stepped forward with his jaw clenched incredibly tight.
"Who had access to his private recovery room?" Mason demanded loudly.
Dr. Brooks shook her head in sheer disbelief.
"Only you, his private security detail, and my specialized medical staff."
I pulled Lily closer to my chest as a terrible, icy shiver ran down my spine.
Lily buried her small face deep into the collar of my pale gray housekeeper uniform.
"Mama, the bad smell is still here," my daughter whispered softly.
I froze completely in place.
I looked down at my three-year-old daughter with my heart hammering against my ribs.
"What do you mean by that, sweetie?" I asked her in a breathless panic.
Lily pointed a tiny, trembling finger directly at Mason Reed.
"That man smells exactly like the rotten chicken in the room."
Absolute silence fell over the brightly lit hallway.
Mason stared at my young daughter with an expression that made my blood turn completely to ice.
"What on earth is the kid talking about?" Mason asked with a forced, unnatural chuckle.
But his dark eyes were completely dead and devoid of any real amusement.
He slowly reached his right hand inside his expensive, tailored suit jacket.
I knew exactly what that specific movement meant.
I had grown up in a rough neighborhood where reaching into a coat meant someone was drawing a concealed weapon.
Adrian Vale's trusted chief lieutenant was the actual traitor.
Mason had poisoned the medical equipment himself while pretending to stand guard.
And my innocent toddler had just exposed his massive betrayal to the entire medical floor.
I did not wait for him to pull the gun completely out of his shoulder holster.
I grabbed a heavy metal medical tray from a nearby surgical cart and hurled it directly at his face with all my strength.
The solid steel tray smashed into his nose with a sickening, audible crunch.
Mason stumbled backward aggressively as bright red blood erupted down his crisp white shirt.
"Run away now!" I screamed at Dr. Brooks.
I scooped Lily tightly into my arms and sprinted desperately down the long hospital corridor.
Heavy, angry footsteps pounded against the linoleum floor right behind us as Mason recovered from the sudden blow.
A terrifying, suppressed gunshot shattered the glass window just inches away from my head.
I ducked into the narrow stairwell and practically flew down the concrete steps.

Suddenly, the heavy metal door at the bottom of the stairs swung violently open, blocking our only exit.
Three massive men in black suits stood at the landing with their weapons already drawn and pointed directly at us.
