Chapter 3 - Dust and Platinum

The descent was cold, the air thick with the smell of damp concrete and rust. Vance guided Elena through a maze of decommissioned maintenance tunnels, the faint rumble of the active subway lines vibrating through the walls miles away.

After twenty minutes of agonizing limping, they reached a heavy, blast-proof door. Vance punched a twelve-digit code into a rusted keypad. The green light blinked, and the door hissed open, breaking a vacuum seal.

Vance hit the lights.

A bank of overhead halogens flickered to life, illuminating a subterranean vault. It wasn't a damp cellar. It was a state-of-the-art gemological laboratory, perfectly preserved beneath a layer of white dust. Workbenches lined with precision microscopes, laser-guided cutting wheels, ultrasonic cleaners, and locked safes.

This was the sanctuary Vance had built with his first millions, a place he had abandoned when the cartel put a hit on him.

Elena collapsed into a leather rolling chair, staring around the room in awe. "You didn't just sell snacks, did you? You're him. The Artisan."

"I was," Vance said, walking over to a stainless steel sink and washing the convenience store grease from his hands. He grabbed a fresh medical kit and began properly stitching Elena’s wound. "Now, I'm just the guy trying to keep you from bleeding out."

"Silas won't stop," Elena winced as the needle pierced her skin. "He needs the ledger on that emerald. If he gets it, he buys the city's political infrastructure. He becomes untouchable. We have to sell it. Use the money to disappear."

"You can't sell the Verdean Eye," Vance said, securing the bandage. "Every fence from New York to Macau knows that stone. The second it hits the black market, Silas will trace it, and you'll be dead before the wire transfer clears."

"Then what do we do?" Elena asked, desperation edging her voice.

Vance walked over to his primary workbench. He pulled a heavy canvas cover off a diamond-tipped lapidary wheel. He picked up the Verdean Eye, holding it up to the harsh halogen light. It was breathtaking. A masterpiece. It was his greatest triumph, and his greatest curse.

"We kill the Eye," Vance said, his voice hard. "I'm going to cut it into three separate stones. I'll polish the micro-engravings off the girdle, destroying Silas's ledger forever. Then, we fence three anonymous, flawless emeralds and vanish."

Elena stared at him. "You'd destroy your own masterpiece?"

"My masterpiece," Vance murmured, turning on the lapidary wheel, the machine humming with a high-pitched, deadly precision, "got me stuck working the graveyard shift. It’s time for a redesign."
