Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Linoleum

The violent chime of the door sensor was louder than a gunshot in the dead quiet of the store.

Vance didn’t flinch, but his hand instinctively drifted beneath the counter, his fingers brushing the cold, taped handle of a heavy steel crowbar.

A woman stumbled through the glass doors. She didn't belong in this zip code. Even through the tearing and the blood staining her side, Vance could recognize the cut of a bespoke Italian silk trench coat. Her heels, one broken, clicked frantically against the linoleum. She slammed into the snack aisle, knocking a display of potato chips to the floor, before collapsing against the counter.

"Lock it," she gasped, her voice trembling, her eyes wide with a primal, hunted terror. "Please. They're right behind me."

Vance’s gaze darted to the street outside. Two dark SUVs had just jumped the curb, their tires shrieking against the wet pavement. Four men in heavy tactical jackets were already spilling out, their hands hovering over bulges in their waistbands.

Vance didn't ask questions. Survival in the underworld—a world he had spent ten years trying to forget—relied on reflexes, not conversation. He hit the emergency lockdown button under the register. The heavy steel shutters slammed down over the windows and glass doors with a deafening crash, plunging the store into the sickly, fluorescent half-light just as the men reached the entrance.

Fists pounded against the corrugated steel. Muffled curses echoed from the street.

Vance looked down at the woman. She was clutching a small, black velvet pouch to her chest as if it were her own beating heart. As she shifted, the pouch slipped from her slick, bloodied fingers. It hit the floor, the velvet tie loosening.

Out rolled a stone.

Vance’s breath caught in his throat. The exhaustion vanished, replaced by an electric jolt of pure, unadulterated shock.

It was an emerald. But not just any emerald. It was fifty carats of flawless, deep-jungle green, cut in a proprietary modified cushion style that bent the light into a mesmerizing, infinite star.

The Verdean Eye.

He knew every facet, every microscopic angle of that stone. He knew it because he was the one who had cut it twelve years ago for a Russian oligarch who ended up with a bullet in his head three days later. It was the stone that had put a price on Vance's head and forced him to become a ghost in a 4:00 AM convenience store.

The past hadn't just walked through the door. It was bleeding on his floor.
