Chapter 10 - The Final Polish

The sirens were wailing in the distance by the time Vance and Elena reached the ground floor via the service elevator. The police were swarming the block, but Vance knew the blueprints of the building better than the architects. He led Elena through a subterranean maintenance tunnel that emptied out three blocks away into a quiet alley.

They stood in the shadows, catching their breath.

"Silas is alive," Elena said, her voice shaking. "He'll come after us again."

"No, he won't," Vance said calmly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small audio recorder. "While he was bragging in the club, I sent a live broadcast of his voice to the FBI, detailing his bribery of the state governor. His cartel is going to eat him alive before he ever sees the inside of a courtroom."

Elena let out a shaky sigh of relief, leaning against the brick wall. "What about the emeralds? Julian took them."

Vance smiled, a rare, genuine expression. He reached into his other pocket and pulled out the small velvet pouch.

Elena gasped. "How? Silas took that from me on the dock!"

"Silas took a decoy pouch filled with green glass cut to the exact dimensions of the emeralds," Vance explained. "I’m a master jeweler, Elena. Faking stones is child's play. I kept the real ones."

He poured the three flawless, cut emeralds into her trembling hands. They glowed even in the dim light of the alley.

"Two of those are yours," Vance said. "Fence them in Geneva. Use the money to buy a new identity, a new life. Disappear, Elena. Really disappear this time."

"What about you?" she asked, looking up at him with tears in her eyes. "Are you going back to the corner store?"

Vance looked down at the single teardrop emerald he had kept for himself. It was small, but it was perfect. He thought about the flickering fluorescent lights, the smell of old hot dogs, the bone-deep exhaustion of a life spent hiding in plain sight.

"No," Vance said, his voice carrying the quiet, absolute confidence of a man who had finally reclaimed his soul. "I think I'm going to take a vacation. Somewhere warm. Somewhere they appreciate fine craftsmanship."

He turned and walked out of the alley, blending seamlessly into the waking city. The ghost of the convenience store was gone forever. The Artisan had finally stepped back into the light, and he wasn't running anymore.
