Chapter 6 - The Ghost from the Past

Arthur Vance stared at me through the driver’s side window with cold, calculating eyes.
I had attended this man’s funeral when I was in college, crying over his closed casket.
Now, he was standing in the blinding Bahamian sun, holding a gun at my fraudulent husband.
Vance ordered Adrian to unlock the doors, his voice carrying an undeniable authority.
Adrian was shaking, his confident con-man persona entirely shattered by the sight of a real predator.
Celeste sat frozen in the back seat, completely silent for the first time since I met her.
Vance pulled my door open and yanked me out of the car by my wrist.
He did not look at me with any warmth or familial affection.
He told Adrian that they had gotten sloppy, leaving a digital trail straight to the island.
I realized then that Vance was the actual mastermind behind the entire operation.
He had faked his death to avoid federal prosecution and had been quietly draining my father’s estate through proxies.
Celeste and Adrian were just his pawns, hired to handle the messy emotional work of marrying me.
Vance shoved me toward the black SUV, telling his men to tie up loose ends.
I knew that meant he was going to execute Adrian and Celeste right there on the road.
As much as I hated them, a double murder would bring an international investigation that I might not survive.
I secretly reached into my purse and triggered the personal safety alarm on my keychain.
A deafening, ear-piercing siren erupted from the device, echoing across the quiet island.

Vance flinched, dropping his gun for a split second to cover his ears.
Before I could run, a massive hand grabbed my shoulder from behind and shoved a rag over my mouth.
