Chapter 1 - The Prodigal's Return

I had not spoken to my grandmother, Eleanor, in seven years. But as I watched Genevieve lean down and whisper something into Eleanor’s ear—a venomous, cruel smile playing on her lips—I stepped out from the shadows of the silk curtain.
"Step away from her, Genevieve," I said, my voice cutting through the hollow chatter of the grand hall.
The string quartet faltered. A hundred pairs of eyes turned toward me. I wasn't wearing a tailored tuxedo like the rest of the Harrington men. I wore a simple, dark leather jacket and boots that had seen real dirt. I was Asher Harrington, the heir who had walked away.
Genevieve straightened, her emerald silk gown catching the light. She looked at me as if I were a stain on the granite floor. "Asher. I didn't realize security was letting the homeless in tonight. We already made our charitable donations for the fiscal year."
The crowd murmured. But I wasn't looking at Genevieve. I was looking at Eleanor.
My grandmother slowly raised her frail, trembling hand. She bypassed Genevieve entirely and pointed a single, crooked finger directly at me.
"Come here, boy," Eleanor croaked, her voice barely a whisper, yet it commanded the entire room.
I walked past the gaping elite, ignoring Genevieve’s furious glare. I knelt beside Eleanor's armchair. She grabbed my collar with a strength that defied her fragile frame and pulled me close.
