Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

Emergency backup lights bathed the hallway in a sickly red glow.
Megan spun around, but the man who whispered to her was gone.
She grabbed her purse from Nancy and backed away from the group.
Her maternal instinct screamed at her to find Jason.
He was asleep in the sunroom, far away from this chaos.
Dominic’s voice cut through the tension.
He demanded to know who had just spoken.
Victoria crossed her arms and accused Megan of losing her mind.
Dominic wheeled himself closer to Megan, blocking Victoria’s path.
He looked directly into Megan’s panicked eyes.
He asked her exactly what she had heard.
Megan’s voice shook as she repeated the threat about Arthur Vance’s money.
Nancy gasped and dropped the metallic flash drive onto the floor.
Dominic’s expression shifted from anger to absolute terror.
He ordered Nancy to take Victoria to the kitchen and stay there.
He grabbed Megan’s wrist and pulled her toward his office.
He locked the heavy wooden doors behind them.
He booted up a hidden laptop that was not connected to the main network.
He frantically typed in a series of passwords.
Megan demanded to know what was going on.
She screamed that she just wanted to get her son and go home.
Dominic finally looked up, looking older and more tired than ever.
He confessed that Arthur Vance was not just her landlord.
He revealed that Vance was the ruthless man who had driven his father to suicide.
And more importantly, Vance was Jason’s biological grandfather.
Megan felt the floor drop out from under her.
Her ex-boyfriend had lied about his last name.
Dominic explained that he hired her to keep her safe from Vance’s hitmen.
Vance wanted custody of Jason to secure a massive trust fund.
The flash drive was just a distraction to get her arrested and separate her from the boy.
Megan ran to the security monitors on the wall.
She clicked on the camera feed for the sunroom.
The yellow blanket was thrown on the floor.
The small cot was entirely empty.
The glass door leading out to the gardens was shattered.
Megan screamed her son’s name and sprinted for the door.

Dominic grabbed a hidden firearm from his desk drawer.
He told her they had exactly ten minutes before Vance’s men crossed the state line.
