Chapter 10 - The False Victory

At 5:17 on a Tuesday morning, Dominic Mason opened his eyes.
He saw his maid asleep beside his bed with a toddler curled against her chest.
They were back at the mansion.
The gunshot wound from the warehouse had been stitched up by a private doctor.
Arthur Vance had been arrested after the police found the servers.
The Mason Industries empire was finally safe from hostile takeover.
Megan had stayed by Dominic's side all night, refusing to leave him alone.
She had used a basin of cloudy water to cool his fever.
Dominic felt her right hand still wrapped loosely around his own.
He looked at her exhausted, beautiful face.
Nobody ever stayed for him.
He had spent twenty years pushing everyone away.
Yet this stubborn, underpaid woman had risked her life for him.
Something unfamiliar tightened in Dominic’s chest.
The corners of his mouth slowly lifted.
It was clumsy and small.
But at thirty-six years old, Dominic Mason finally smiled.
He felt a deep sense of peace wash over him for the first time.
The nightmare was finally over.
He squeezed Megan’s hand gently, vowing to give her and Jason the world.
His cell phone buzzed loudly on the nightstand, breaking the silence.
He reached over carefully to avoid pulling his fresh stitches.
He looked at the glowing screen.
It was a text message from a blocked, untraceable number.
The message contained a single, high-resolution photograph.
It was a picture of Nancy, the trusted house manager, handing a crying Jason over to a stranger.
Underneath the photo was a terrifying caption.
It read that Arthur Vance was only a pawn in the real game.

The text ended by thanking Dominic for getting rid of Vance so the real boss could take over.
And the real boss was Jason’s father, who was standing in Dominic’s driveway right now.
